Report explains Giants' thoughts on J.J. McCarthy, Jayden Daniels

There's more information about stories linking the New York Giants to Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.

On Thursday, fantasy football writer John Frascella of RazzBall reported that individuals within the Giants are "upset" someone leaked that they're at least somewhat interested in McCarthy.

Frascella added that he was told New York is actually "more interested" in LSU Tigers signal-caller Jayden Daniels, but Frascella also pointed out that the Giants learned Daniels "is definitely" going to be selected within the top-three picks of the draft.

"Thus, their attention turned completely to McCarthy," Frascella said about the Giants. New York currently possesses overall choice No. 6.

Hours after Frascella posted this information on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, well-known Denver Broncos and NFL insider Benjamin Allbright of KOA 850 AM and 94.1 FM shared he could confirm "both items" mentioned by Frascella are true.

It was said following the NFL Scouting Combine that McCarthy is "the player the Giants want," but Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post is among those who have reported that the national champion may not be available to New York at pick No. 6.

Specifically, the Minnesota Vikings seem to be preparing to move up from choice No. 11 to either No. 3 or No. 4 in the draft order with a quarterback in mind.

As recently as Thursday, one report claimed that the New England Patriots "plan to hold firm and take a quarterback with the No. 3 pick." However, the Arizona Cardinals appear open to trading the fourth overall selection for a haul of assets.

Meanwhile, analysts such as Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN and multiple CBS Sports personalities continue to predict that the Washington Commanders will make the previously mentioned Daniels the draft's second pick.

Assuming the Chicago Bears take USC Trojans star Caleb Williams first overall, as most expect, a club such as the Patriots or Vikings could grab either North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye or McCarthy at No. 3.

In short, Williams, Daniels, Maye and McCarthy could all be gone by the time the Giants are called to use the sixth pick.

It's worth noting that it's the "smokescreen season" portion of the draft process, and Giants general manager Joe Schoen may be hoping a top-tier wide receiver such as Marvin Harrison Jr. of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Malik Nabers of LSU or Rome Odunze of the Washington Huskies will be on the board at No. 6.

Whatever truly is or isn't going on behind the scenes, it's difficult to ignore that rumblings about the Giants possibly being "done" with 2023 Week 1 starting quarterback Daniel Jones aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
